An opal doublet places a layer of natural Australian opal over a dark backing. The backing does not put color into the opal. Nature already handled that considerably better than we could. It creates contrast, much like a dark sky makes fireworks easier to see.
The sterling silver surrounding the stone works with light in a different way. Hammer marks reflect it from changing angles, while the raised Celtic lace creates lines, crossings and shadows across the wide band. As you move your hand, one surface brightens while another detail disappears.
