The strength and grace of opals

When was the last time you saw something so compelling you couldn’t help but share it? I love this video of a young man meeting a stranger, going 50 feet below Earth’s surface to find a small opal. None of his friends knows where he is. There are hundreds of opal mines and only one man know which hole he went down. Watch his reaction here.

After his experience he felt compelled to share Earth’s beauty. He also thought it was a little crazy and so did Mike Rowe when he mined opals on his show, Dirty Jobs. After a few years of making jewelry using a variety of gemstones, we were gifted an opal. Now we travel the US and invite you all to come and see the unexpected colors, beauty and grace of opals.

We were so compelled with it’s beauty we couldn’t help but share it.

Our first opal.

Surprisingly the weight and harsh treatment that opals get while mining and transforming into jewelry is more than you would expect for this beautiful stone. Opals come from a firm foundation. They form in crevices in the earth, they adhere to boulders, or can even fossilize. Knowing that opals are durable, we build on their foundation and make even stronger jewelry settings. We’ve also learned that opals can benefit from the strength and support of an additional foundation from carbon fiber.

You can learn more about these “unbreakable” opals here.

With just one opal Ryan and I were inspired to take action. We hope that this beautiful stone will lead to your transformation as well. Leave behind the gloom and dull jewelry and step into beauty and grace. Romans marveled at the kaleidoscope of colors. The red of ruby, the green of emerald, the yellow of topaz, the blue of sapphire, and the purple of amethyst. Many cultures and now me and Ryan believe this is the most beautiful gemstone of all. We should all enjoy jewelry that has all the colors of the other gemstones. We should all have opals for big days and every day.

I love that opals have the colors of sunrises and sunsets. And with a simple ring I can wear these bands of red, pink and blue colors all day. The guy from the video thinks girls are silly for wanting a little bit of green on our ears. But for me, it’s a reminder of my strength and grace.

If you are just getting started with opals, I’d recommend our stacking rings. After that I’d add earrings to help bounce light and create natural contour onto your face. Don’t stress about your style. Don’t default to the same boring gemstones. Enjoy the beauty of opal that is so amazing it reminds us that even the smallest things are never insignificant.

Our great Earth is the biggest, most remarkable canvas and everywhere I look I see creativity at work. The beauty and strength of the earth is captured in opals.
