Connecting over Christmas Cards

I love the tradition of Christmas cards. I enjoy taking the pictures, designing the cards and making spirits bright. It’s a wonderful time of year when you look forward to checking your mailbox.

My mother does a great job of cataloging Christmas cards after the season has passed and my sister proudly displays the pictures she receives all year. I visit and enjoy and laugh at the cute pictures each time.

While we are more connected than ever before, there is something special about Christmas cards in the mail. For Christmas 2020 we aren’t gathering as we have in the past. The world has shifted away from my father having us write a paragraph about ourselves for the Christmas newsletter. We are more digital and life is moving too quickly

I believe human connection is the most important investment you will ever make. We post and we like, but are we really connecting? A simple start can be the power of a Christmas card. Back at my sister’s house, she gets a Christmas photo card from her dentist. The first time it happened, it was awkward and the picture was awkward. She displayed it to show how awkward it was. Now four years later, I look forward to seeing what her dentist’s photo looks like. This picture doesn’t make it into the historical archives, but we do connect over it each year.

In our digital age, it is very easy to send a Christmas card. Sites like Shutterfly, Minted and even Walgreens can help us create these moments of contact. Find a good family photo, find a cute template and hit print. This year, when it’s so hard to join together, let's find the time to send a Christmas card.

I usually have one or two attempts at a “good” Christmas photo with Ryan. I asked and he obliged and there is a chance you may see us standing in the same clothes with the same tree in 2021. But for now, we will sit down and sign our cards and think of each of you. We hope to see you soon. Until then we say cheers to a joyful present and a well remembered past. We wish you a Merry Christmas.
