Loop there it is. Size 9.

Loop there it is. Size 9.
A famous disposable cup from the 1990s mall food court is making a comeback in this ring. Not the actual cup. Sterling silver seemed like the more sensible long term material.
In 1989, designer Gina Ekiss entered a company contest with a pattern of teal and purple brushstrokes. The design became known as Jazz and appeared on disposable cups and plates throughout the early 1990s. The cups were made to be thrown away, yet the pattern was memorable enough to reappear decades later on clothing, pillows and even cars.
It turns out a throwaway object does not have to make a throwaway impression.
Loop There It Is borrows that lesson. A repeating scalloped border circles a natural black opal from Lightning Ridge, carrying the floral and pinfire patterns inside the stone into the surrounding silver.
This is the difference between detail and intricacy. The loops are not simply placed around the opal. They are thoughtfully arranged to lead your eye around it, connecting the individual details so the entire ring becomes more interesting than any one part could be alone.
Those details become even more enjoyable once the ring leaves the workbench and joins your ordinary life. You are meeting your Gen X friend for coffee. As you reach for your cup, the window light catches the opal and a bright green flash appears between the silver loops. Your friend stops in the middle of a sentence to ask about your ring, which is generally preferable to stopping in the middle of a sentence because neither of you remembers why you walked into the room.
The coffee is ordinary. The moment does not have to be.
We do not only want to see beauty in extraordinary places. We want it present in ordinary life.

The opal does not reveal everything at once. One movement brings out green pinfire. Another uncovers blue or a small multicolor floral pattern that had apparently been waiting for better lighting and a more appreciative audience.
The silver behaves much the same way. Its scalloped loops look soft and lace like, although persuading metal to look this well mannered requires heat, tools and considerably more effort than the finished ring admits. Light settles into the recessed areas while the raised curves catch it, creating new edges and shadows as your hand moves.
That is the purpose of the intricacy. The border does not compete with the opal. It repeats its rhythm, extends its detail and gives your eye another reason to make the trip around.
