Boulder opal forms in seams and cavities within ironstone. When the stone is cut, part of that host rock remains attached to the opal. In this piece, the ironstone also travels visibly thorough the face of the stone. Those brown lines are not stains, cracks or evidence that someone neglected to finish the job.
