How to find a genuine opal ring.

Ever wondered if you’re getting what you paid for?

I do believe that opal cannot be imitated because of its natural beauty, but there are synthetic opals that can catch your eye. Finding a genuine opal requires some knowledge and careful observation, as opals come in a variety of types and qualities.

There is no simple test to prove that a stone is synthetic. However, there are some clues to identifying fake opal.

Opal created in a lab

  • displays bright colors in large patches.

  • the pattern is often “too perfect” and arranged.

  • display a column of color.

  • often not from Australia.

  • imitation opal is colored tinsel set in plastic.

Here are a few more tips on not genuine opals:

  • synthetic opals can still be fragile

  • still be expensive

  • doublets and triplets are a great option, but are not pure opals

Remember that opals are valuable and can vary widely in quality and price. The opal dealer or jewelry should fully disclose what kind of opal you are getting.

We work with two Australian opal miners to get you beautiful opals. We do enjoy working with doublets and triplets to be budget friendly. You can learn more about opal triplets HERE.

Gazing into a kaleidoscope of nature’s most mesmerizing colors in all opals never gets old. The patterns within each opal are as unique as fingerprints. You are like an opal, precious and rare, not like a stone found every where.
